What educators are saying

I was looking for ideas as to how to add engagement to an already established lesson. Thanks for giving me some direction as to how I could modify this lesson.
My students loved this! They were very engaged and caught on very quickly. No trouble at all getting them to complete! Very fun but also informative! couldn't recommend this enough!

Description

Causes of the Civil War Interactive Stations Activity

Get your students moving and engaged by taking your students through an interactive stations activity on the Causes of the Civil War!

The activity consists of EIGHT interactive and differentiated stations that can either be combined or broken up into smaller/larger stations to suit your needs. The activity also comes with a notes/important connections section for each station and corresponding analysis/critical thinking guiding questions. The eight interactive stations within this activity are:

  1. The Three "S's" Causing the Civil War
  2. Fugitive Slave Law
  3. Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857)
  4. Uncle Tom's Cabin
  5. Kansas-Nebraska Act
  6. Bleeding Kansas
  7. John Brown
  8. Election of 1860

This museum-like stations activity on the Causes of the Civil War was designed to be an introductory activity which is completely student-led and should be an engaging, thought-provoking, and challenging activity for your students.

This activity can be delivered to your students in a variety of ways but is obviously contingent upon the size and space available in your classroom. Many of these stations can be combined to conserve space, if necessary.

I use this activity as a completely student-led activity where students can work in groups of three/four, pairs, or individual. For this activity, I do not use a timer for each station, but a running clock for students to keep track of their time remaining in class. I find this method creates a more relaxed collaborative Smithsonian-like learning environment. However, using a timer can also be very effective to keep students on task, or if you decide to use this as a traditional group station activity.

One thing to make sure to do is to remind your students the day before to bring their headphones to class. The QR codes at each station will take the students to supplemental topical short instructional videos. As students are moving around the room, they can choose to take notes and address the corresponding questions after or complete the corresponding questions as they review the documents and video clips. Finally, as a way to close out the activity, a synthesis activity is provided where students are challenged to write a well-developed paragraph through choosing one of three differentiated options to challenge all learners contributing to the learning activity.
