Description

Verb conjugation has never been so fuzzy!

This is a sampler of Catjugation in French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. In Catjugation, the teacher and students use printed illustrations of spunky cats as visual aids to facilitate lessons on the mechanics of verb conjugation.

Description:
With CatjugationTM, there are 3 main types of cats: a preening pink cat, a proud yellow cat with a sardine, and a napping blue cat. These 3 cats parallel the three main groups of verbs: ER, RE, IR in French, AR, ER, or IR in Spanish and Portuguese, ARE, ERE, IRE in Italian. The cats are divided into 3 parts: head, body, and tail.

The head has a subject pronoun written on it (ex: French “je”, Spanish “yo), the body has a verb root (ex: French “parl”, Spanish “habl” etc) and the tail has a verb ending (ex: French “e”, Spanish “o”) The head and tail have matching patterns (stripes, spots, etc), while the body is always plain.

Students attach the cat tails (verb endings) to the cat body (verb root), by matching the pattern on the cat tail with the cat head (the subject). In this way, the mechanics behind verb conjugation, that is, finding the correct verb ending to go with its respective subject, is visually highlighted via the cat’s patterns. To show that irregulars often work much differently than the regular verbs, there is also a mischievous purple cat that has two parts: the head for the subject, and the body/tail for the entire conjugated verb.
