To play, simply select a four-letter word to place in the top of the grid (a list of 84 words, all of which contain only one vowel, is provided). Then students fill in the categories for each letter. For example, if the letter is "C" and the category is "Fictional Characters" two possible answers are: Charlie Bucket or Charlotte. Games can be timed (3 to 10 minutes, depending on the age of your students) or untimed. You can also encourage students to come up with more than one answer for each box. In addition, there is also one blank grid that you or your students can use to come up with your own categories.

Suggestions for use:

  • Laminate the same Game Card 4-8 times for Group Play along with the Word List. Use at a center with dry erase markers and a timer. Students can score their games by taking turns sharing their answers and crossing off answers that other players have also gotten. Count only original answers to get a score for the game. Of course, students could also play alone or in pairs.
  • Use on a document camera with the whole class.
  • Extend the activity by using a completed game as a writing prompt. Require students to choose 2-4 of their answers to use in a story.
  • Use the blank grid to create a game to go with a particular unit or holiday.
