Description

Students design and build a marshmallow catapult using the following materials to achieve the goal. Great for teaching the engineering design process and a fun way to teach group teamwork skills and growth mindset. Google doc editable.

Materials:

  • One 12”x12” piece of cardboard
  • Rubber bands (up to 4)
  • Pencils (up to 4)
  • One 12 inch piece of Masking Tape
  • One Plastic Spoon
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

Goal: Launch a marshmallow at least __3__ meters and hit within 0.5 meters of a target.

Constraints: When launching, only one hand (not two) can be touching the spoon. You may not have two hands on the spoon at the time of launch.

Includes: directions sheet, exit ticket, rubric, redo worksheet

NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
NGSSMS-ETS1-3
Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
