Lesson Targets: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Reading: decoding, encoding, fluency, and pronunciation

Cognition: Critical Thinking, Analyzing, Interpreting, Problem-Solving, Comprehension skills, Vocabulary knowledge, recalling information,

and relating the content to Real-life, authentic experiences.


  • Students will be able to read a short 3-page mini biography about Carlos Santana. There are questions that students may answer by writing simple sentences and sharing their answers to practice their speaking skills. Students may collaborate in pairs or groups, or they may work individually.

  • Students will be able to watch a short clip of CBN's Interview with Carlos Santana, where he provides his insight into the experiences within his life, his love of music, the collaboration of using different sounds and artists, along his performance in Woodstock over 50 years ago. This video gives the students the perspective of seeing Carlos Santana as a person, as he provides a rich cultural perspective and unique words of wisdom.

  • Students will be able to translate the meaning of two famous quotes by Carlos Santana. Students may analyze and interpret the meaning of the quotes and as there are questions that follow, students may answer them and indicate how the meaning of the quotes relates to their own lives. Students can work in pairs, groups, or individually, or the instruction may be delivered with an interactive whole-class activity.

  • Learn the lyrics to "Corazon Espinando", by Carlos Santana and Mana. There is a song provided so that students may become familiar with the words to this song. Feel free to play it as many times as you wish, but there is NO need to memorize the lyrics.

  • Before learning the lyrics, there is a slide, which will provide a short Spanish paragraph that explains how the words are expressed to convey significant meanings and interpretations with significant feelings.

  • Karaoke Game: this is demonstrated within the video. The video will play and the lyrics are provided at the bottom of the screen in white. When you see the white circle, that is the missing word. Students must fill in the blank and choose the correct missing word from the multiple choices that are provided to them on the right-hand side.

Implementation:

I usually put this activity on my projector and students will shout out the missing word and I press it to move on in the game. GET STUCK? DON'T WORRY! The song will automatically stop to give students the appropriate "think time" they require to recall information to fill in the blanks.

This game can be given to students via the link if they wish to play the game again, review it, or go at their own pace.

  • Questions: Students will be able to answer comprehension questions: about the interview and the overall meaning of the song. Students may share how they feel when they hear the lyrics and listen to the song. This wraps up the lesson.
