What educators are saying

Loved it! We used this for our homeschool curriculum. It was a great mini-unit for my son and I to do together. Thank you!

Description

Carl Sandburg is said to have written in the language of the people, making him one of the easier poets to teach to upper elementary and middle school students. This unit of study is to help you teach about one of America's best known authors by providing select poems, analysis forms and a guided discussion outline for one of Sandburg's longer poems. These poems fit with any poetry curriculum that you may use.

You will find 5 poems written by Sandburg in this unit. Each poem includes its own literary analysis worksheet that can either be a guide to your classroom discussion or as a follow up for further student analysis. “Skyscraper,” one of Sandburg’s lengthier poems, also has a teaching guide, giving you a plan and focus for teaching this poem.

Poems Included:
1. A Sphinx
2. Halsted Street Car
3. Fog
4. Young Sea
5. Skyscraper
You may consider keeping “Skyscraper” set aside for remembering 9/11, as its contents could definitely be linked and related.

Also included is a short bio on Carl Sandburg with highlights from his life and experiences, as well as a quick look at his published works. Use the include literary devices posters (color and b&w) in your classroom to help students with these poems and others they will encounter throughout the year. The more they are exposed to poetry, the more they will begin to understand and embrace the beauty of it!

Check out my other poetry units for Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson. Both are perfect for 5th – 8th graders! You can also purchase all three of these great units of study for a discounted price.
