Description

Do your students struggle with reading comprehension? Science of Reading is used to describe 5 components of reading instruction: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. This Camping book and activities is a great tool to help with all of these components as well as teach about camping.

Students may read the words, but not retain the information. This Camping Emergent Reader will solve that problem because it has real photos of vocabulary words that are thematic and help young students make better connections. There is also a simple song with the words so it helps students to retain the words and enjoy the story.

Just Revised with even more value! This book and teacher guide help students to read with comprehension. This reader and activities are all about camping, and it is now interactive so your students can write down the phonetic elements of the words in their black and white copies.

  • It is perfect for teaching words about camping. With our books, nouns aren't just nouns, now they are pictures in the child's mind.

  • Students will learn the words CAMPING, TENT, CAMPFIRE, CANOE, SLEEPING BAG, LAKE and FLASHLIGHT.

  • The real photos have been great for my ESL and emergent learners!

  • This reader is great for homework because we have included a guide on what to do with these books.

  • Help parents teach about camping in this simple reader as well as practice reading, camping vocabulary and do phonics all with this one resource!

  • There is a page with the words that they can highlight as well as illustrate for their poetry notebooks. My students love going back to these songs and they have helped them to retain the words, so it is improving their reading as well as their knowledge about science and social studies.
  • Sometimes I catch a couple of students singing the songs together as they practice reading the books together.

  • We have included a teacher guide on how to use the literacy boxes on the pages of the emergent readers. We like to use them to teach phonetic elements in the words. It really helps our students to see the connections in the words. It makes a great supplement for science of reading.

  • We have just added word wall camping vocabulary cards with the real photos from the book. I display them at the beginning of our unit on camping and they help my students to make connections with how all the words relate to each other.
  • There is a teacher guide on how to use the cards. The real photos have helped my ESL students to better understand the vocabulary words. Students like using them in the writing center. It helps them to stay on topic as they write about camping.

  • We also just added differentiated worksheets that reinforce the camping vocabulary words and sight words. Students cut and paste and put the words in sentence order.
  • There are sheets with 4 words and sheets with 6 words. Students practice handwriting when they copy the sentence, then they will illustrate the sentence and there is a bonus sentence or question at the bottom of each worksheet that will enhance critical thinking skills.

I love using them in literacy centers during guided reading. I have also used them in my guided reading groups, especially when I first introduce how to complete the sheets. The bonus questions at the end of the worksheets generate great discussions in reading groups.

Sight Words that are highlighted on the worksheets:

  • second
  • carry
  • took
  • once
  • stop
  • need
  • began

  • We added differentiated Easel Assessments that include audio where all the words are read to the students, and one that has no audio for students who need to read it for themselves. There are multiple choice, yes, no, true, false and a open-ended question.

Included:

  • Color CAMPING book
  • BW CAMPING book
  • Lyric sheet for song
  • 7 Word Wall Cards that are real photos of the camping vocabulary from the book that can also be used in a writing center
  • NO PREP worksheets with 6 words and 4 words with camping words and sight words for morning work, guided reading or independent centers
  • Teacher Guide for each resource with numerous ways to Differentiate
  • Easel Assessments with audio
  • Easel Assessment without audio

FAQ

1. How can I use these books if I am limited on paper?

We have included directions on how to print front and back to conserve paper.

Copy enough books for a center or a guided reading group and laminate all the pages, so students can write on them with dry erase markers. This way you can also use them year after year.

2. Why are there empty boxes on the pages?

We call those literacy boxes. We use them to reinforce word features that are in the vocabulary words. We have included a teacher guide with ideas on how to use them.

3. How can I use the picture word cards?

We have a teacher guide with ideas. When you have finished teaching the camping theme, place the cards in a manilla folder or one of those photo boxes we mention in the guide and use them in a writing center.

4. What is a lyric sheet?

It is a single sheet with all the words from the book. Students highlight the words and illustrate it and put them in a poetry folder to review. This also makes a great center or for early finishers. We sing the song during morning meeting.

5. Do the worksheets with 4 words have the same reinforced vocabulary words and sight words as the sheets with 6 words?

Yes, so you can teach the same vocabulary and sight words to the whole class and then use the differentiated sheets to meet students' needs.

  • Introduce these words using a daily calendar in July if you're teaching summer school.

July word of the day calendar

  • Teachers also like to reinforce this vocabulary with the:

Brain Bounce Game Cards.
