Description

California Deconstructed Standards Content Planning Manual - Math 5th Grade

The Deconstructed Standards: Content Planning Manual deconstructs each of the California Common Core State Standards for your grade level.

You get all 40 of the 5th grade standards unwrapped and presented as individual lesson objectives, and their corresponding sub-objectives. Everything you need to quickly write professional lesson plans for the entire 5th grade school year!

Each of your unpacked standards is segmented to provide a basis for planning and execution of a 55 minute lesson (approx.).

This manual addresses the following objectives:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Write and interpret numerical expressions.
  • Order of operations
  • Generate numerical patterns

Number and Operations in Base Ten

  • Understand the place value system.
  • Apply concepts of place value, multiplication, and division
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths

Number and Operations - Fractions

  • Use equivalent fractions to add and subtract fractions.
  • Multiply and divide fractions.
  • Interpret fraction multiplication as "scaling"

Measurement and Data

  • Convert between different unit of measurement
  • Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.
  • Represent and interpret data.
  • Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/8, 1/2, 3/4)
  • Volume using unit cubes
  • Volume using volume formulas, V = l x w x h and V = B x h

Geometry

  • Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
  • Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
A cube with side length 1 unit, called a “unit cube,” is said to have “one cubic unit” of volume, and can be used to measure volume.
A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using 𝘯 unit cubes is said to have a volume of 𝘯 cubic units.
