This Caldecott Medal Unit includes everything you need to introduce your students to the award and get them evaluating Caldecott Medal winning illustrators.
The unit includes:
- Introduction to the Caldecott - this is an editable PowerPoint that explains the history of the medal, how it is awarded, and why it is significant.
- Illustrator Showdown activity - this is an editable PowerPoint. It includes a list of suggested illustrators and books and talking points for comparing the illustrations. You choose two illustrators to compare and read one book by each illustrator to your students. They fill out a simple ballot for each illustrator and then you have them vote for their favorite at the end. This is very low prep and LOTS of fun!
- Caldecott Book Review Pennants - this is NON-EDITABLE PDF. There are two versions, one for younger students with no writing involved and one for older students. The finished pennants make great decorations for your library, classroom or hallway!
PLEASE NOTE: Images of the Caldecott Medal and images of illustrators and book covers are not included. These images are copyrighted and I do not have permission to use them. There are spaces for you to insert the images yourself.
