In this project, students will:

  • work in groups
  • measure cans brought from home
  • calculate the surface area
  • use calculus to optimize the volume of the can
  • graph the radius vs. volume function in Desmos
  • write a reflection

What materials are needed?

  • rulers
  • soft tape measures (a.k.a. sewing tape measures)
  • cans (soda cans, soup cans, tuna fish cans, crushed tomato cans, evaporated milk cans, paint cants, etc.)

How long do students need for this project?

  • Plan on three 60-minute class periods for students to complete project.
  • A very diligent group could finish in two 60-minute class periods.

Need it to take more time?

  • Students could present their findings to their classmates
  • Students could contact the manufacturers with their results.
  • Challenge students to find a formula for optimized volume based on surface area.
