Calculus BC Year Long Weekly Spiral Review - Fun Theme

Engage your Calculus students and keep them on their toes with this Spiral Weekly Review!

This is one of my best teaching ideas!! My schedule and classes are not conducive for daily warm-ups, but............, big but here, my students really need to understand that they are taking college level courses and are responsible for all they have learned. They cannot get an A or a B in a course or even last month's test, and then forget it. No one in college reteaches material and they have to take great notes, have excellent resources and reference sheets.

I came up with ThrowBack Thursdays Review. On Thursdays (unless something else was on the agenda like a test or Thanksgiving), I would project three problems from the past on the screen or whiteboard. It was not only a wake up call, but became fun as I embellished the slides with items from the past (see Preview). The "math past" was anything relevant from Algebra, Geometry, PreCalc or Trig and, of course, Calculus problems from earlier in the semester. I designed many of the questions based upon something that was coming up. For example, the volume of a cylinder from Geometry popped up on a slide a week or two before Volume by Cylindrical Shells. Most days we maxed out at 15 - 20 minutes. I always showed the solutions so I could limit the time and move on with my daily lesson.

ThrowBack Thursdays was an overwhelming success. Another benefit was that my students told me the little reviews helped with their SAT's. I often let them have selected reference sheets from my Calculus Survival Kit and sometimes graphing calculators. I printed the references from theUltimate Calculus Survival Kit in different neon colors at the beginning of the year and would let them take out the green reference or the pink, for example.

This resource includes 108 questions, three per page, on 36 pages for the typical 36 weeks, give or take a few missed Thursdays. Each page (slide) has three questions timed for a typical Calculus 2, or AP Calculus BC pacing schedule.

I have also included the FULL SOLUTIONS, so this is a NO PREP activity for you. Calculus is hard enough to teach without having to come up with solutions when students don't get an answer right. There are 108 problems and 108 solutions. In terms of grading, sometimes I printed the questions and let them do them individually, or in pairs and graded them towards a special TBT grade. Most times it was a class thing, trying very hard not to let the same student dominate the discussion. A few times I left a few for them to do when I was out and they had a sub. It was a lot of fun each week. The last Thursday of the semester we played my Calculus BC Jeopardy™ Game.
