"Cajas de cartón"- Antes de Leer activity

This Before Reading Activity was created to help students to gain some background knowledge about Francisco Jimenez, the author of "Cajas de cartón", prior to reading his novel. This activity also introduces students to information about migrant farming. This activity includes a PowerPoint presentation and an activity packet for students.

This activity has a jigsaw component and is best completed in groups. In my Spanish 5AP class students are broken up into three groups with 3-6 students in each group.

The activity asks students to do the following:

FIRST THE ENTIRE CLASS.......

• Annotates a brief biography about Francisco Jimenez's life
• Responds to comprehension questions about the biography
• Reads a short article focused on photography of Migrant Workers in the 1950s
• Chooses a photo from the article to paste to their comprehension packet and describes the photo

THEN, THE STUDENTS BREAK INTO SMALL GROUPS AND DO THE FOLLOWING......

• Interact with three sources related to Migrant farming (articles, photos, video clips, audio clips, etc.) The links for these sources are given to them.
• Take notes on what they learn
• Share their learning with the class. As they share what they learned, the class completes their activity packet.
