COLOR | COLOUR WORDS Write the Room OWLS Literacy Center

Learn your color - colour words with owls! Write the room, ABC order, read-write-color sheets, and color – word matching cards. Write the Room is an interactive literacy activity in which children move around the room looking for the picture/word cards. They read the words on the cards and then write them in the corresponding spot on their recording sheet. Get your kindergartners, transitional kindergartners, and preschoolers moving around the room and learning their color – colour words!

These activities are ideal for use at a literacy center, during small group time, or as an independent work activity. The owl theme makes this a perfect literacy activity for back-to-school, or all-year long! The activities reinforce color recognition and reading skills as well as writing skills.

Easy prep! Print and you’re ready to go! If you like, you might back the color cards with colored paper and laminate for durability.

** This resource offers US and UK/CAN/AUS/NZ spelling versions for “color/ colour” on the student recording sheets. There are two files in the download; please be sure to open the one that best meets your needs! **

Included in this packet:

★ Write the Room owl picture cards with color words. These colors and color words are depicted: red, green, blue, yellow, pink, purple, black, white, orange, brown, aqua-turquoise, grey-gray.

★ 4 recording sheets:

1. “Write the Room” for recording the color words.

2. “Write the Room” recording sheet with color guide words for students to trace the letters.

3. “ABC Order”—children write the color words in alphabetical order. To differentiate, an ABC order sheet is included with this set, if you would like to extend this activity and have students put the words in alphabetical order after recording them.

4. Read/write/color sheets are included, for children to read the color word, write or trace the word, and then color the object the corresponding color.

★ Alphabet sheet (color and blackline copies): An alphabet sheet is included as well, to assist your students with the ABC ordering activity and with correct letter formation.

★ Answer keys for easy correcting and/or for students to self-check their work.

★ Owl - themed picture and color word cards to hang on a word wall or to cut apart in order to have students match the color word to the picture. This is a fun activity for a literacy center or as a game during small group time. These cards may also be used as flashcards for color recognition or to read color words.

★ Hang the color cards on a bulletin board, along with the “We Know Our Colors!” or “We Know Our Colours!” bulletin board sign!

There are two picture/word cards on each 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper. When printed, each card will measure 5.25” x 8”.

Simply print the color cards, mount them on construction paper and laminate for durability if desired, and this activity is ready to go!
