Description

This persuasive essay writing prompt will increase student awareness of homelessness in America while teaching how to write a well-supported persuasive essay. The essay prompt includes: A link to a youtube.com video about a homeless camp in Lakewood, NJ; a writing prompt form with a suggested paragraph organization, a prewriting form, a variety of facts and statistics that will help students form an opinion on how to deal with homeless camps in America. The supporting details are presented in two ways. Use the scrambled supporting detail pages with students to encourage them to find connections between the information. Use the organized supporting details for students who struggle with seeing connections between information.

The lesson may also be used as a springboard for a class discussion on homelessness.
