Description

Looking for an engaging and creative way for your students to apply their knowledge of the Byzantine Empire? This lesson is perfect for you! Students will have the opportunity to create their own mosaic and receive quick and easy feedback with the included rubric. You can post the doc to your learning management system or print it out for your students.

Before creating their own mosaic, students will learn about the importance of mosaics and browse examples using Google Images and a website about the Hagia Sofia. As the teacher, you may assign one of two options provided:

  1. Students can create a mosaic of their own life, interests, and culture.
  2. Students can create a mosaic about anything they have learned up to this point about the Byzantine Empire.

This lesson includes mixed-level questions to guide instruction and promote critical thinking. In addition to exploring the Byzantine Empire, students will practice essential ELA skills such as identifying and applying domain-specific vocabulary, composing clear written responses, and other writing and reading comprehension skills.
