What educators are saying
Description
This Holocaust resource pairs a video introducing the Bystander Effect, Martin Niemoller's quote "First They Came," and the picture book Terrible Things by Eve Bunting to encourage students' close reading analysis, annotation, and reflection on the role of bystanders during the Holocaust. Students are then asked to apply the idea to their own lives. This is a perfect introduction to any Holocaust unit and can be used with texts such as Night, The Diary of Anne Frank, Refugee, Salt to Sea, The Complete Maus, The Book Thief, etc.
This resource includes:
- The Bystander Effect - video and questions to introduce students to bystanders and upstanders. A Google Jamboard Reflection is also included.
- First They Came - annotation and six questions of analysis, a Mimic Poem that guides students through writing their one version of the Niemoller quote.
- Terrible Things - First Read, Second Read, and Reflection sections guide students through Eve Bunting's allegory.
- A print-friendly PDF version and an editable Google versions
- A complete answer key
****ALL RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE AS AN EDITABLE GOOGLE RESOURCE AND IN A PRINT-FRIENDLY BLACK AND WHITE PDF VERSION****
