Description
This is a full unit teaching keyboarding/business students the correct formatting for business letter writing. This file includes an interactive PowerPoint that can be used several ways: The teacher can show the PowerPoint in class and teach by lecture, students can run it themselves and learn on their own, or they can use the video file which includes the PowerPoint but also the oral lecture. This is great for students who missed a day and need to catch up, but it can also be used as an individual assignment each student does at their own pace at their own computer using headphones.
Included is also a sample letter with 21 letter assignments. The first 10 letters teach only one formatting type--block format with mixed punctuation. The second set of letters includes a mixture of block, modified block, mixed, and open punctuation. This allows the teacher to go as simple or as deep as the standards and time allows. There are also several free-write letters where students are given basic parameters of a situation, but write their letter from their own heads.
Finally, a short 12-question quiz and practical exam are also included, with a key. Personally, when I teach this I do NOT do all 21 letters. My students usually do about 10 or 11 of the letters. But the unit is designed to be flexible in the number of days. It can be done in two days or ten, depending on the depth required.
Recently I created an add-on for this assignment, Self-Grading Business Letters in Excel, which uses Excel's unique features to give students immediate feedback on whether they did their spacing and punctuation right. The difference in their understanding level was HUGE after I started using this assignment! You can find a link to it in the "related products" section below.
