Bundle of Poems for Building Reading Fluency & Writing Stamina (K-2)

If you're at all like me, you're always looking for short poems for your emerging readers and writers. Learning letter sounds, sight words, word endings, etc., doesn't do any good if students don't have enough opportunities to take that isolated learning to the task of real reading. Each month includes 20 original poems (by me) in 2 formats for emerging readers and writers. This is a reading and "writing with a twist" product. Not only will students be reading and rereading poems daily, students will be also be copying the poems to strengthen hand muscles, increase writing stamina and word production speed. I can't tell you the number of times that I see students take 20-30 minutes to write something that should take them 5. Being able to produce letters and words quickly is an essential skill...and the short burst "Read & Copy" Book in this product gives students an opportunity to be cognizant and aware of the time it takes them to write. There is a weekly graph included so when you assemble the Read & Copy books for students each month, the graph would be the last page. The graph is designed to raise writing stamina awareness and give students an opportunity to set writing stamina goals from month to month.

So far, this bundle contains 220 poems and 220 Read and Copy Sheets (poems and lines) and all coordinating Stamina Graphs and Parent Letters.

Between the reading and writing component of this product, students will be working on several ELA standards daily:

RL.10, RIT.10 – Engage in group reading activities; Read independently & proficiently

RFS.1 – Print concepts; Reading & Writing from left to right, top to bottom, 1-1 correspondence

RFS.3 – Know & apply phonics & decoding skills; letters, sounds, words, sight words

RFS.4 – Read emergent text with purpose and accuracy to increase fluency

W.7 – Participate in shared writing experiences

L.1 – Demonstrate command of conventions of English

L.2 - Demonstrate command of proper punctuation

L.4 – Learn new vocabulary, like nouns, favorite things, and grade level language

Note: If you are a school that utilizes written comprehension in K-2 as a form of reading assessment, use of the product will make a significant difference in the time it takes students to answer the written comprehension portion of the assessment.

July is yet to be added. July poems will not be all July related but filler poems really that you could use as poem substitutes.
