The Roman Catholic Church was the center of Medieval life. Almost every village had a church, larger towns and cities had cathedrals. Church bells rang out the hours, called people to worship and sounded warnings of impending dangers.

The local church was the center of community activity. Services were held several times per day. Town meetings, plays and concerts we held at the church. Merchants set up business around the church.

People looked for the local church for education, to tend to the poor, sick, and needy, and to explain the world events. Prayer and devotion to the church they believed would keep them from disasters and provide salvation for their souls. The Medieval Church had become very powerful!

Islam was a religion founded in the 7th Century AD by Muhammad, an Arabian merchant from the city of Mecca. In the centuries leading up to the birth of Muhammad, Christianity had become the dominant faith of the Mediterranean and its message was quickly spreading to other regions of the world via the major trade routes of the era.

Mecca was a city along these trade routes, and may have played a role in the flow of goods and ideas between the trade systems of the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. It should therefore come as no surprise that Islam would be heavily influenced by the traditions of Christianity and Judaism.

The expansion of Islam was astounding. In just 100 years since Muhammad first claimed prophethood, Islam had by force of arms, conquered all of Arabia and then expanded out and conquered as far west as Spain and as far east as Afghanistan. The Islamic Caliphate had become the largest empire the world had yet known, controlling some of the most important centers of civilization.

The first of the Crusades began in 1095, when armies of Christians from Western Europe responded to Pope Urban II’s plea to go to war against Muslim forces in the Holy Land. Considered at the time to be divinely sanctioned, these campaigns, involving often ruthless battles. At their core was a desire for access to shrines associated with the life and ministry of Jesus, above all the Holy Sepulcher, the church in Jerusalem said to contain the tomb of Chris.

Absolution from sin and eternal glory were promised to the Crusaders, who also hoped to gain land and wealth in the East. Pope Urban’s plea met with a tremendous response, both among lower levels of the military as well as ordinary citizens; it was determined that those who joined the armed pilgrimage would wear a cross as a symbol of the Church.

The crusades lasted for 200 years until support for such efforts disappeared in the 16th century, with the rise of the Reformation and the corresponding decline of papal authority.
