    Description

This is a bundle of 2, highly animated, power point presentations on Civilizations of the Americas - The First Americans. Both presentations together number 37 slides. Each of the presentation slides are editable so you can change it to fit your individual needs.

Native Americans have lived in what is now the United States for more than 10,000 years. White settlers have only been living in the United States for a little more than 500 years. These Americans had no written communication so it is difficult to know much about them. What remains is a few animal and human bones, some basic tools, and bits of pottery.

Historians have surmised that the first Americans probably migrated on foot from Siberia, across the bearing straits into what is now present day Alaska. The most recent Ice Age occurred 30,000 years and water levels dropped by 200 feet making it possible for animals to migrate Asia to North America. These first inhabitants were hunters and gatherers who later learned to farm.

    Summary

Many historians believe that the first settlers of the Americas arrived from Asia across a land bridge that formed in the Bering Strait during the last Ice Age. The varied geography resulted in the emergence of many distinct cultures. In North America, these early inhabitants included the Inuit people near the Arctic Circle, the Anasazi people of the Southwest, the Hopewell peoples of the Ohio River valley, and the Iroquois of the Northeast.

Mesoamerica, the areas of Mexico and Central America that were civilized before the arrival of the Spaniards around 1200 B.C. with the Olmecs. The most advanced were those of the Maya and the Aztec.

Mayan civilization flourished between 300 and 900 AD. The Maya built splendid temples and pyramids and had a sophisticated calendar. By the 12th century, the Aztec had begun to migrate to the Valley of Mexico. The Aztec built temples and pyramids as well as roads made of stone. They controlled many semi-independent territories.
