Build an Essay! 4th and 5th Grade Writing State Test Prep

Do your students struggle with the complexity of writing constructed response essays for state tests? (OST, STARR, Smarter Balanced, PARCC, FSA) Break it down with this hands-on activity that will have students organizing and arranging the different parts and pieces of a multi paragraph essay from start to finish! Since repetition is key, there are 4 different “build an essay” activities to choose from!

This resource will guide you on how to easily make colored copies of the following parts of a complete essay: introduction paragraph (including a hook and thesis), detail paragraphs that cite evidence and use transition words, and a conclusion paragraph (restating the prompt and providing an opinion). Students will have the chance to build up to 4 complete essays! There are 3 leveled sets to provide differentiating by scaffolding support!

This method has helped my own students become confident, skilled writers. As a whole, my classes have routinely scored in the 80% (or higher) range on the Language Arts state tests with writing being a very strong component! I encourage to try and adopt this process for your own students!
