What educators are saying

My third and fourth grade homeschool co-op students loved creating their own totem poles using their own story. This was a fabulous resource to share the rich history of Native American's and totem poles.
I used this resource as a part of my Native Americans unit. My students enjoyed creating their own totem poles!

Description

After studying about the Northwest Coast Native Americans, students will enjoy creating their own Welcome poles in a culminating art activity. Create a meaningful art activity tying this craft into your current Native American curriculum. Students cut and paste animals that have meaning to them onto two Welcome Pole patterns, or draw from the provided handouts, their own animal designs. Animals provided are native to the Northwest and are drawn in simple forms for student use.

The design possibilities are limitless with this versatile resource. Students can work independently, using the pre-drawn outlines, or work in groups. 2 design styles are provided. One makes a small design 8 to 11 inches tall, the other can be glued together to make a large design 16 to 18 inches plus.

A large group design can be made by giving each student a 9 x 12 piece of paper. Each student designs their own crest on the 9 x 12 piece of paper. Once finished, the crest can be taped, stapled, or glued together to form a large class Welcome Totem. This would make a great display for the cafeteria, front office or hall.

Includes:

Student handout with all 10 designs.

5 pages of large animal designs. Two images on each page.

1 large Welcome Pole pattern, sized to fit the large animal images. Copy 2 to 3 per student for a large pole.

1 large pole parts page with wings and a pole base.

1 small Welcome pole outline.

2 pages of animal image for the small pole project. Four animal on each page.
