What educators are saying

My students adored learning about different insects. The clues helped them activate prior knowledge. They were able to practice many different reading skills with the texts about insects. They were very excited to receive their badges at the end.
This was a great resource to use with my students. They liked the activity and found it engaging. Loved these!

Description

Dive head first into this fun and exciting unit all about bugs and insects! Your class will learn all about butterflies, ladybugs, ants, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and bumblebees. With this complete time saving unit all about bugs and insects, your students will learn insect vocabulary, complete an insect study and construct an insect craft.

With this completely planned and resourced unit on bugs and insects, all you need to do is print and go! The unit was designed with common core standards in mind, with a special focus on reading and writing with close reading and responding to text based questions as a strong focus. Students will be engaged as they are tasked with becoming entomologists throughout the unit.

Included in this bug and insect study…

Entomologist Eddie Letters and Insect photograph cards - Throughout the unit students receive letters from Entomologist Eddie. He will be giving the class clues about the insects they’re going to read about. The students will use their inference skills to guess which insect they’re going to be studying that day. Eddie will also be  sending pictures of each insect and an insect for us to add to the class  “insect jar”. Once all the bugs have been collected, they will earn an Official Entomologist Badge from Eddie!  Integrates literacy standards/skill (inferencing) into their daily Science instruction.

Insect Jar - Includes directions on how to draw a large insect jar and pictures of the insects studied to print and add to the jar as they go through the unit. A fun visual to track each insect they have learned about!

Text Passages - There are two versions of each passage to allow for easy differentiation based on the needs in the classroom. Shorter passages contain larger print and only one reading text based question while longer passages contain three text based questions on a separate page. Color & black and white options.

Entomologist Journals - Students will conduct an insect study for each insect. There is one page for each insect studied. Students will label the diagram of the insect and then list 3 facts they learned about them.

What are teachers saying…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “If you are looking for an insect project this one is incredible. I LOVED teaching this unit. My kids loved guessing what insect it was from the clues, completing the entomologist research project book, I printed big jars where I "put" the cute insect pictures in and stapled the facts and letters on the wall next to the jars. The only thing I could ask for is more insects!! Thank you!” - Lauren W.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My students absolutely love getting a "package" from Eddie each day! We have enjoyed diving deep into our nonfiction texts and making sure that we are answering the questions in complete sentences using text evidence. Great resource!” - Sykes in 2nd

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My students LOVED this resource! We stretched it out over weeks and used the materials both in live meetings and distance work.” - Sarah’s Teaching Points and Resources
