Description

For this project, students will be divided into six groups to research baby items needed for a child's first year of life. The six groups are divided into the following categories:

  • baby food, diapers, and formula
  • furniture and accessories
  • baby clothing
  • health and safety
  • toys and on-the-go items
  • child care
  • pregnancy and delivery fees (project example, included)

Each group will design a slideshow with average items that fall into their assigned category. They will include example items, images, prices, quantities, and details regarding the chosen items for a child's first year. Students will research the amount of items needed (ex. how much formula used over the first year) and multiply the price by the average quantity needed to come up with a total price for the year. At the end of their slideshow, they will present the total price for all items in the category.

Before the project students will begin a notes sheet (included) with their best guess for each category, then they will complete the WS during the presentations in order to see how close or far off their estimates were!

Also included is an example project over pregnancy and delivery fees. You can present this example project to demonstrate an example format and presentation! As everything is either a Google Doc or Slides, it is fully editable. The resource will open in a Google Drive folder and is ready to go. You will just need to adjust the rubric's points if necessary and assign the categories between six groups.

I've used this project over the years with my Child Development and Early Childhood Education students. Each year they are astonished by how much babies really cost!
