Brazil Tiles Craft—Traditional Azulejos, Contemporary Artist Athos Bulcao, Easy

Learn about the iconic tiles of Brazil with an easy “PRINT AND PAINT” craft! This is an introduction to tiles of Brazil, which are commonly seen in cities of Brazil adorning surfaces of buildings. It is a nice way to appreciate an aspect of Brazil that tourists often encounter but is rarely studied in schools.

Art project is easy and makes great decor. You will print templates onto white card stock that each contain 4 tile patterns of one design. Using instructions, students will paint each of their patterns using authentic colors and craft acrylic paints (younger students may use colored markers). These 4 tiles are then glued onto a cardstock backing to make a complete design, then you may trim the extending borders of cardstock. Each small tile is 4”x4”, so student's complete piece will be approximately 8"x8" when done. You may place all student pieces butted up together to make beautiful displays for hallways or bulletin boards.

Templates (8 total designs) are provided to be printed on cardstock and then painted with acrylic craft paint by students.

1. Lesson introduction (print this out so you may read from this as you present complementary images);
2. Images file in a slideshow format that you may project to present to students;
3. Art Project 1 – Traditional Azulejos; includes art project instructions, materials to source, and 4 design templates
4. Art Project 2 – Contemporary Art Tiles of Artist Athos Bulcao; includes instructions, materials to source, and 4 design templates.

You may have classes each make just one design, or mix and match.

Materials needed to make one art project (consisting of four 4" cardstock tiles) are: craft acrylic paint or color markers (colors are specified in art project instructions), thin paint brush/bowl of water/paper towel if using paints, white cardstock to print template on, cardstock in any color for backing, glue, and scissors.
