Description

This 21st Century Math Project is another tremendous opportunity to integrate subjects in an Algebra 1 classroom. Hands-on STEM based learning for hands-on student. Along using basic algebra skills to solve basic physics problems, students will engage in reflective writing and use data to support decisions.

In this 12 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, handout resources for students to use in collecting data and an optional follow-up inquiry. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

I do not claim to invent the idea of the Box Car Derby, but I have extended it into my Algebra 1 classroom.

-- In "The Design", students will sketch their chosen design.

With a budget of $100.00 you will be able to purchase items that you have brought to class with the "Purchase Order" handout. You cannot exceed your budget. You have to set-up The Store in class where students will purchase the essential materials they need.

Students compete in the "Box Car Derby Competition". Once students have their data they can complete their calculations.

-- In “The Derby: Data Crunch”, students can practice or review the same type of math as the project.
