Designed to support Gestalt Language Processing for autism students using the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA ) approach. Research confirms that shared reading is associated with language growth and increased engagement among students with autism. These book companions were designed to support gestalt language processors by modelling relevant and functional gestalts while increasing engagement.

Just PRINT & STICK! These book companions are perfect for SLPs to use in speech therapy or share with parents to facilitate shared reading at home. You can use the book companions with children who are readers or non-readers since the gestalts can be read aloud by either the child or the adult.

It is recommended that the adult use exaggerated intonation when modelling the gestalts to draw more attention to their own verbal output and create more interest for students. Each book was selected specifically to support gestalt language processors because either the characters experience heightened and relatable emotions or the storyline includes familiar situations, such as wanting to stop and look, playing on the beach, or encountering challenges while preparing a meal.
