Description

Do your students use social media? Looking for a fun pragmatic language activity to engage middle school and early high school students? For middle and high school students, several important academic and social skills include being able to communicate effectively, know your audience and talk about yourself to other people. This helps students make friends, prepare for job or school interviews, and lets you get to know your students.

This customizable, digital social media activity can be used to target a variety of goals in your speech room or academic classroom. This comes with a directions sheet, a blank customizable directions sheet (edit through a pdf reader and re-save), two templates that have ideas for topics already filled in, two lists of possible topics for students to choose their own boxes, and three blank templates (one numbered to make it easier to label their boxes and one with and without pronoun options).

Here are some ways this digital social media activity can be used for your students:

  • At the beginning of the school year or whenever classes switch (such as new electives) this is a great way for students to introduce themselves to their teacher and to one another both in pictures and then orally. Make one for yourself and introduce yourself to your students at the beginning of the year.
  • Looking to help build pragmatic language skills? Students can identify common interests and potential friends. Cover up the identifying information and profile picture and make an inference about the person based on what information is presented in pictures.
  • Academic subjects: Make a fictional page for your favorite character, ahistorical person, or scientist and have students illustrate what they have learned.
  • Prefer a paper copy? Print it out and have students illustrate each box by hand.
  • This can be used by academic teachers, speech-language pathologists, school counselors, occupational therapists, and other therapists both individually and in small group settings.
  • Profiles can be printed out and displayed in your classroom as reminders to support conversation starters, can be presented digitally (and turned in through Easel), or added to a Flipgrid or Airtable assignment.

This document is a pdf and is best edited through the Easel feature of Teachers Pay Teachers. This can be assigned directly to Google Classroom through Easel and Easel gives a link that you can copy and paste to other learning platforms. I recommend taking a screenshot, and inserting the picture that way. Other editing programs can be used, but they may not be as successful. Use this template repeatedly by making a copy of the document and then selecting the pages you would like to include on Easel.

You may share completed versions with teachers but If other teachers would like their own copy of the file, please direct them to my Teachers Pay Teachers store for their own copy at an additional price for additional licenses.

Don’t forget to leave feedback on this digital download so that you may earn credits toward your future TPT purchases.
