    Description

The 'Black Poetry Bundle' has all the materials you need to engage your students in studying, annotating, and analysing some of the most powerful Black poetry of the past 50 years.

6+ complete lessons cover four iconic black poems:

    • Amanda Gorman’s 2021 Inaugural Poem “The Hill We Climb”
    • Tupac Shakur’s autobiographical “The Rose That Grew from Concrete”
    • Maya Angelou’s classic poem, “Still I Rise”
    • Kobe Bryant’s retirement poem, “Dear Basketball”.

Focusing on themes of oppression, resistance, survival and success, these lessons unpack the key themes of each poem and encourage students to connect the poet’s message to key events in recent history – from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to the Black Lives Matter Protests of 2020-21.

All materials are fully optimised for both digital delivery (using Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams) and A4 printables – to support distance, in-person, and/or hybrid learning.

I hope this lesson sequence is as impactful and engaging for your students as it has been for mine.

    Happy teaching
