Description

Black History IS American History, and it's up to us to teach it. Middle schoolers will love this Black History Month game-style poetry escape room activity! Kids read a scenario to escape by solving 6 poetry puzzles. There are 6 poems by 6 famous African American poets. A poetic devices reference sheet is included to help kids solve the puzzles. Digital and print versions are both included in this one product!

Poems Included (links provided)

◾️"Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou

◾️"Harlem" by Langston Hughes

◾️"The Miracle of Morning" by Amanda Gorman

◾️"The Rose That Grew from Concrete" by Tupac Shakur

◾️"Tending" by Elizabeth Alexander

◾️"Sympathy" by Paul Laurence Dunbar

Here is what is included:

Teacher directions - for setting up the digital version

Student digital version - kids have to do this step-by-step and can't move on to the next section until the section they are working on is correct

Printable version - in case you'd prefer this

Answer key - for printable version (the digital version is self-correcting)

Poetic Device Reference Page - to help kids solve the puzzles

6 Poems - links provided

Scenario - kids read this to set them up for the activity

Survey - a few questions for kids to answer/reflect briefly after the activity

Here is what I recommend for a smooth activity:

⭐️Be sure that kids read the scenario before starting.

⭐️Kids should have some scrap paper and something to write with to jot the codes down before entering them in the Google Form. It just makes it a little easier to manage.

⭐️The form is set up with 6 poetry activities.  For the digital version, they can’t more on to another section until the current section is correct. If you are using the printable version, you can have them come see you before letting them move on (answer key provided).

⭐️I recommend having them work with a partner.

⭐️You could make this a contest if you’d like, to see who finishes first!

⭐️This is a great activity for Black History Month (February) or National Poetry Month (April) or any time you are studying poetry.  It will get kids involved with a review of important concepts.

Be sure to check out the PDF and video previews.

Enjoy!
