Black History Month for Little People

Black History can be a very "heavy" topic, especially when teaching it to Kinders and Firsties! So I intentionally made this unit very light and positive, while making sure to bring about the topic of Black History in a meaningful manner! Your students will learn more about themselves, Black History Greats, and each other by doing the activities in this unit. It is fun, purposeful, and hands-on, which all make for a quality unit of study. I had so much fun writing this unit about a topic that is near and dear to my heart, and you will see this throughout the activities. It is my favorite Black History product I've written thus far!

Included are the following activities...

~We Are We: This is a poem that I've written that focuses on two friends that show how they are different on the outside, but also have many similarities. The poem comes in a full-paged color, big book. An identical student reader in black and white is also included.

~An Egg-speriment: This is an experiment that follows the scientific method that focuses on using two eggs, brown and white, and how they are different on the outside. Students crack them open and see they're identical on the outside. They discuss their findings and relate this to people and the color of our skin and race.

~The Color of Us: This is an easy reader that focuses on how we have different features (hair, skin, families, etc.) but our hearts are the same. There is a follow-up sorting activity included to do as a comprehension component.

~Our Friends... : This is the main section of the unit that highlights four African American Greats: Rosa Parks, Marian Anderson, George Washington Carver, and Harriet Tubman. Each person has a full-page color, biography poster with comprehension question printables. There are three graphic organizers for each person for students to record their learning throughout their activities. Finally each person has a follow-up activity. These include making a bus-shaped book, making peanut butter, listening to various music, and making a freedom quilt square. Fun!

~Research Poster: This craftivity is an over sized poster for students to make. They are asked simple research questions about their Black History Great and the poster has interactive foldables too! These will make a great display for the hallway or bulletin boards. It also is a wonderful way to introduce research to your kiddos!

~Our Differences Make Us Special: This is a student booklet that they make that focuses on their character traits that make them different from everyone else, and special at the same time. There is a cover included to attach to the booklet.

~I'm Awesome Poster: This is a poster that focus on each student, but all the students help each other make them! Students write adjectives to describe each other and then the students "wear" them around their face. Very cute and photo sample/instructions are included.

~Put-Up Books: This is an activity that can last all year if you choose! Each student has a put-up (opposite of put-downs) book and the students take about 30 seconds to write a put-up about that person in their book. Then they switch and write another put-up about someone else. At the end, they have a booklet of wonderful positive comments from their friends. They will cherish this forever; I have had previous students tell me they kept theirs for years!

~Our Important Book: This is a class book modeled after the book, The Important Book, written by Margaret Wise Brown. There's a color cover and student printable included.

~Character Traits: To help explain some of the character trait terms, there are word wall cards included of some of the vocabulary words to preview with the students.
