What educators are saying

What a great resource to use digitally for teaching about MLK Jr in a literacy unit. My students were receptive to this activity and the objectives stuck. Thank you!

Description

With this bell ringer, your students can respond to a quote by famous African Americans for Black History Month. This digital resource in Google Slides allows students to choose a prewrite template to fit their response to a quote each day. Students write a paragraph in response to each quote. Then, they do a brief research activity. This Bellringer / Do Now activity for the beginning of class.

Contains one quote from each of the following:
•Martin Luther King, Jr.
•Ruby Bridges
•Booker T. Washington
•Sojourner Truth
•Harriet Tubman
•Rosa Parks
•Langston Hughes
•Malcolm X
•George Washington Carver
•Frederick Douglass
•Barack Obama
•Marcus Garvey
•Maya Angelou
•Jesse Owens
•Dr. Mae Jemison

You will download a pdf with teacher tips and instructions. In that pdf, you will find a link to a student resource in Google Slides.

The student Google Slides resource contains:
⇒Page 1: Title Slide
⇒Page 2: Directions Explains how to choose a prewrite and paste it before the quote.
⇒Page 3-6: Prewrite Templates
⇒Pages 6-21: Quote Prompts
⇒Page 22-23: Research
Students choose their favorite quote and then briefly research the speaker. They are challenged to think about how the speaker's life relates to what was said.

The expectations for the amount of writing can be differentiated based on the ability of the students.

This resource could be used with Middle School or High School students as a free write response. You would just delete the paragraph templates before assigning.
