What educators are saying

Create a resource to use to explain Black History Month to my students, they enjoy learning about each individual person who had an impact in today’s society.
My students loved this! We read one each day and would discuss the person of the day. I would find many students wanting to read more about the person of the day during SSR. They sparked great conversations and my students loved that they had a collection of mini books at the end of the month.

Description

I'm so happy to be able to provide this product to you! This is a bundle set of my (Top 50) Best Selling mini-books, that focus on African American Heroes! Each book consists of one page that is folded into a four page booklet. No cutting, stapling, pasting required, which makes it super easy for even the youngest students to construct!

The text is short, sweet, and to the point, highlighting the major accomplishments of the African-American Heroes focused on. Half of the booklets in this product (Set 1 and 2) have some color on each page and they can be printed in black-and-white and look just as wonderful. Set 3 I decided to make just black and white. There is a reflective question on the last page with an area for students to demonstrate their comprehension of the text by drawing an illustration.

The 30 American Heroes focused on in these sets are:
~An Intro to Black History Booklet
~Ruby Bridges (First student to desegregate a school)
~George Washington Carver (Inventor of Peanut Butter) (2)
~Jesse Owens (Olympic Track and Field Star)
~Jackie Robinson (First African-American drafted into Major League Baseball)
~Frederick Douglass (Abolitionist and Newspaper Publisher)
~Madame CJ Walker (First African-American Millionaire)
~Benjamin Banneker (Astronomer and Almanac Publisher)
~MLK Jr. (Civil Rights Activist) (2)
~Harriet Tubman (Conductor on Underground Railroad) (2)
~Phillis Wheatley (First African-American to publish a book of poetry)
~Barack Obama (First African-American President)
~Rosa Parks (Mother of Civil Rights)
~Thurgood Marshall (First African-American Supreme Court Justice)
~Garrett Morgan (inventor of gas mask and traffic light)
~Lydia Newman (inventor of improved hair brush)
~Dr. Charles Drew (Father of Blood Banks)
~Dr. Daniel Hale (first to do successful open-heart surgery)
~Mary Bethune (teacher devoted to African American education)
~Bessie Coleman (first African American woman pilot)
~Michael Jordan (NBA superstar)
~Althea Gibson (first African American to play in Wimbledon)
~Oprah Winfrey (first African American Billionaire)
~Toni Morrison (Literary Great)
~Mae Jemison (first African American woman in space)
~Shirley Chisolm (first African American woman in Congress)
~Henry Box Brown (slave that mailed himself to freedom in a box)

The beauty of this bundle is that since there are 30 booklets, you can review one African-American a day! It's an easy way to introduce and/or review the African-American Heroes you're already teaching about during Black History Month and can easily be sent home for homework or used for fluency practice. I'm confident that your students will enjoy these foldables, as will you for their convenience!

But that's not all! I made Set 3 extra special by adding some components you will love having! In each mini-book, there is a vocabulary word underlined. I did this so you could preview some of the text before reading for better comprehension. I did make the font smaller so I could add more information in this set. So please be aware that Kinders will need assistance in reading them! There are word wall vocabulary cards and a student vocabulary journal for students to record the definitions throughout the unit. Finally, I've added display cards with each famous African American's photo and name. Your students will love to see the real person they are reading about! Please keep in mind that these extra supplements are only in Set 3!

I'm sure you'll be most happy with how easy they are to use and the interest your students will have in making them. I've gotten feedback from teachers that use them on the morning announcements for the entire school, teachers that have sent them home as Family Homework, and even Kinder teachers that use them as a jumpstart for their students first research/informational writing! They are easy to read with your help and always lead to great discussion, which helps them to learn!
