What educators are saying

I loved this resource. My students were very engaged and enjoyed the PSA aspect. I will use this again next year for sure.

Description

This biotechnology and genetic engineering mini-bundle will get your middle school students thinking critically about the ethics behind genetically modified food and organisms (GMO's), gene therapy, cloning, designer babies, and more as they learn about biotechnology and create a Public Service Announcement promoting their stance on their topic.

Depending on how you implement it, this lesson can span 3-5 days and engages students in thoughtful discussion about genetic engineering and gene modification as they read about biotechnology and take notes to prepare for the culminating PSA (Public Service Announcement) project. Students then take the perspective of someone in the community as they defend their position on the ethics of their chosen form of genetic engineering.

This is a great introductory lesson into genetic engineering and biotechnology and could be a great lead into a lab where students observe and analyze DNA karyotypes. Take this lesson a step further by having students debate their topics in front of the class, either individually or in groups, and have the class vote for which side was more persuasive.

WHAT'S INCLUDED in this 3-5 DAY LESSON:

EDITABLE PPT Presentation

→ Lesson introduction slide with objective and warm-up

→ Notes aligning with PDF

NON-EDITABLE PDF handouts

→ Student note-taking page

→ Student-friendly reading covering genetic engineering and biotechnology

→ PSA project and students response pages

→ Teacher guide and answer key

STUDENTS WILL:

• Use the PPT and reading to learn about and take notes on various forms of genetic engineering

• Choose a type of genetic engineering/biotechnology to defend or attack from a chosen perspective

• Present chosen perspective and provide feedback to other student presentations on student response sheet

• Answer any extension questions

TEACHERS LOVE THIS, HERE'S WHY:

❤️Margaret W. says, "This is excellent! I especially like the way the materials lead students to think about how scientific advances affect the whole world and not just a few individuals. Very well though out and presented."

❤️ Amy B. says, "Excellent job in presenting a VERY difficult topic in terms and language easily understood by our science students. Graphics are engaging and will hold the attention of the student. Activities are appropriate and educationally sound. This presentation is HIGHLY creative and will be an asset to my science classroom. Thanks so much for sharing this!"

❤️Razzle Dazzle says, "This product is the complete package. It covers multiple disciplines on a difficult subject. I like that it provides excellent graphics and an example for students. Great product!"

Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
