Teach your students all about some of the main biomes of the world with this colorful, informative, fact-filled unit. Wrap up your biome unit with a fun Biome and Imaginary Creature Poster Project or Mini-Booklet! Kids get to use their imagination along with the knowledge they’ve learned about biomes to create their own creature that can live in one of the biomes studied.

The following biomes are included in this packet:

-Tropical Rainforest

-Temperate Rainforest

- Taiga

-Grasslands

-Tundra

-Desert

-Salt Water

-Fresh Water

-Each biome is depicted on a slide showing plants and animals. Answer Keys provided for all worksheets:

- Student worksheet #1 - 8 Biomes

I project each biome slide onto my whiteboard and ask my kids questions about the slides. Students fill in a worksheet with the following info on each biome: location, climate, description, 2 animals, 2 plants, interesting fact

-Student worksheet #2 - Which Biome Is It? – I have my students work with a partner to answer these 12 review questions after we finish the slide show. Sample questions: In which biome would you find maple and oak trees? Which biome receives the most rain?

Student worksheet #3 - Animal Adaptations

I project the 8 animal slides onto my whiteboard and we discuss the different adaptations each animal has allowing it to successfully live in its biome. Worksheet:

-List 1 animal from each biome and tell about an adaptation that allows it to live there successfully

-Biome and Imaginary Creature Poster Project or Mini-Booklet~ My kids LOVE making these posters and booklets and showing them to the class!! Students pick a biome and they must create an imaginary creature that can live in that biome. Their imagination can run wild while learning about biomes of the world!

For the poster project I’ve included:

-Poster guidelines to be handed out to each student

-5 charts that must be filled out and included on the poster

-The grading rubric I use to grade the posters. Photos of sample poster included.

If you do not want to assign a poster project, I've included a mini-booklet that is created using just 2 sheets of 8.5" x 11" paper. Students draw their imaginary animal (or print from the computer) and describe the creature's attributes. My students love sharing their creations with the class, it is such a fun way to reinforce learning about biomes and animal adaptations! Kids come up with the most imaginative creatures – I am always amazed at their ingenuity!

Another alternative idea: use the MORPHI app and have your students draw their imaginary creatures directly onto the iPad. From there, import the drawing into the 3D printer and create small 3D models of the imaginary creatures. The kids can use them as backpack charms or necklaces. Photos included in this lesson plan.

*NOTE: The 8 biome slides are the same slides used in my Habitats packet.
