Description

This writing unit teaches students to write a five paragraph opinion essay with a thesis statement on a biographical figure. With the Common Core’s emphasis on text evidence, this unit will walk you and your young writers through the entire writing process.

The unit starts with eight possible reading resources that can be used as students read their biographies. The writing portion introduces students to the idea of writing a thesis statement, and then guides them to select three specific examples from the person's life to support their claim. Identifying and evaluating quotes from the text teaches students to strengthen their arguments. This is an excellent unit for introducing the structure of a five paragraph opinion essay to young readers and writers, while also covering history, social studies, and science topics in biographies.

Please note, this unit does not cover how to write a report on a biographical figure. Biography Reports can be found here.
