    20 Lessons

This unit is the fourth in a series, and begins the nonfiction portion of the series. Students will learn the characteristics of biography, autobiography, and memoir along with skills for reading nonfiction. See the preview for a full list of lessons. Each lesson plan includes:

    • Lesson Objective
    • Common Core Standards Addressed
    • Short Lesson Script
    • Sample Anchor Chart (teacher reference, not large enough for display)
    • Suggested mentor text for a corresponding read aloud

    Guided Practice

The 10 guided practice sheets include information from the lesson, and space for students to apply the information to their own reading. Perfect for independent reading, guided reading and interactive notebooks.

    Daily Reading Focus

This is a short prompt that asks students to apply what they have learned during the mini lesson to their own independent reading. Students record their response on their reading bookmark (included) and then share with the class after independent reading time. A powerpoint is included (in both .ppt and .ppx formats) which you can use to display the daily focus onto a smart board or other projector

    21 Discussion Guides

These discussion guides correspond to grade-level picture books you can find in your library. They are designed to meet a variety of instructional needs—each one-page discussion guide includes more discussion points than can possibly be covered. Pick and choose which questions and “think-alouds” will best fit your students. Each discussion guide includes:

    • Book Information: Title, author, grade level (see preview for a list of titles)
    • Instructional Goals—highlight the ones that suit your needs.
    • Text Introduction
    • Think Aloud: A place to stop and model good reading behaviors
    • During Reading Discussion Questions
    • After Reading Discussion Questions
    • Mini-Lesson Ideas: A list of lessons that would go well with the text.

To Use: Highlight your instructional goals. Then highlight the questions and think-alouds that correspond to your goals. Request the book from your library—then you’re good to go!

★★★NOTE: THESE GUIDES DO NOT INCLUDE THE TEXTS THEMSELVES★★★

PURCHASING AS A BUNDLE SAVES YOU TIME AND MONEY!

These mini lessons and read alouds were created to form a cohesive genre unit. The read alouds, mini-lessons and guided practice come together to create a comprehensive genre unit where students learn about the genre as well as good reading behaviors.
