What educators are saying

I have used this resource for 2 years now. It is definitely meant for higher level students (AP or Pre-IB). I have paired it down for my On-level students and having a hands on activity for macromolecules always helps.
My students found this activity engaging and easy enough to manipulate. I am teaching Biology for the first time and this was a valuable resource as I am at a loss.

    Description

Use beads, pipe cleaners, and paper clips to model all four types of molecules studied in a traditional high school biology biochemistry unit. Students will model monomers, polymers, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). This is a tough unit to teach. Chemical structures, monomers, and polymers are so abstract! You will never teach biochemistry without these activities again!

My students love my carbohydrate, protein, and lipid structures activities. Performing the tasks in these activities really helps them to understand the concepts needed for the basic biochemistry taught in high school biology courses.

**What buyers are saying about this resource!**

"My students just finished the first part of this package on carbohydrates and I love it so far! I was able to step back and let my honors classes struggle through and also able to walk my regular class through a little more step-by-step and saw engagement through all of my classes... By the way, I was lucky to be doing this activity today when an administrator came in to do an observation. She loved it as well! Thank you!"

    How to Use This Resource:

Before performing these activities, students should have a basic background in chemistry. Single bonds, simple molecular structure recognition, and an understanding of dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis reactions are necessary to complete the activity.

Each activity requires some setup. During the activity, students read and fill out a packet of information while it instructs them how to build each monomer/polymer. Each activity lists the supplies needed. Check the preview to see setup pictures, supply lists, and more!

This Hands-On Biochemistry Bundle includes the following products in PDF form:

(I recommend that teachers do the activities in the following order.)

Hands-On Biochemistry: Carbohydrate Structure with Beads

Hands-On Biochemistry: Protein Structure with Beads

Hands-On Biochemistry: Lipid Structure with Beads

Hands-On Biochemistry: Nucleic Acids Structure with Beads, Pipe Cleaners, and Paper Clips

Each activity comes with teacher instructions and answer key. See my preview for detailed instructions for each activity!
