What educators are saying

I love having bilingual handouts ready to go so that all of my families can stay up to date on their children's speech therapy! It is so much more efficient to have translated forms ready to go for all my meetings.
I wish I had this resource BEFORE starting early intervention with a new student. I presented it after the fact to explain the process we had just gone through, hoping to provide more clarity, in case the family still had questions. I will definitely use this resource again! Thank you!

Description

I love working with bilingual parents. They are the best. Unfortunately, there is a lack of information in Spanish and I find that there is only so much I can say at a meeting to explain what is happening -- and there's only so much parents can absorb at once too. Plus many meetings feel rushed these days as well.

Handouts, which explain what is going on, are really vital. Parents can take them home and review them at their own speed.

The areas included appear below. This packet of handouts is meant not to be handed out all at once, but pages can be carefully chosen for each meeting. For example, if a student's family doesn't understand the referral process, what language dominance means, and the student has an expressive language delay, you can print only those pages.

I've included a Spanish- only PDF version, an English-only PDF version, and a bilingual PDF version with every other page alternating in Spanish and English -- for quick back-to-back printing:

CONTENTS:

Pg 3 - ¿Qué es la terapia del habla en la escuela? - What is school-based speech therapy?

Pg 4 - Terapia del habla/Terapia del lenguage - Speech therapy/Language therapy

Pgs 5-7 - El proceso de referidos - The Referral Process

Pgs 8-9 - El proceso de elegibilidad - The Eligibility Process

Pg 10 - Evaluación de habla y lenguaje - Speech and Language Assessment

Pg 16 - Apraxia - Apraxia

Pg 17 - Comprensión del lenguaje oral - Oral Language Comprehension

Pg 18 - Expresión del lenguaje oral - Language Expression

Pg 19 - Tartamudeo - Stuttering

Pg 20 - Lenguaje social - Social Language

Pg 21 - Terms of Use and Credits

I used parent-friendly terms to describe speech therapy to parents -- this stuff is tough to understand for lots of people. Also, I included a page that discusses the causes of speech impairments and feelings of guilt that parents experience. I've found that lots of parents blame themselves when their children have communication difficulties and I have found that some families benefit from hearing that it was not anyone's fault. This page does that for you.
