What educators are saying

This resource was very helpful for my students and I. My students struggled with CER this past year.
I absolutely loved this! I used it for a project we were working on during a walkthrough and my administrator loved this rubric.

Description

Are you looking for an easy to use CER rubric and CER handout? CER writing can be challenging for students and this clear and easy to understand resource will help you effectively teach, model, and implement Claim Evidence Reasoning writing in your science classroom.

Please click the PREVIEW to see what is included in this ready to use resource.

CER or Claim Evidence Reasoning writing can be used for practice, labs, or assessment.

Included in this resource:

  • Editable CER rubric - Google Doc
  • One page student handout on how to write a Claim Evidence Reasoning response. This is great to have students put in their science notebooks to refer to each time they write a claim evidence reasoning response.
  • CER sentence starter handout
  • Printable CER student page with a clear layout
  • Tips and more!

A CER (Claim Evidence Reasoning) writing format can be used for:

  • Lab write ups where evidence includes data collected,
  • Assessment at the end of a unit of study or as a quiz, or
  • Explanation of phenomena.

A CER is usually 1/2 of a page to a 1 1/2 pages long. The claim is first and stated in a sentence. I often have students write their claim on a write board and share with others for feedback. Evidence is provided to support the claim and reasoning connects the evidence to the claim. Scientific vocabulary that has been presented is used correctly.

Always model an entire CER for your students to help them be successful. This is a challenging task for students. Set them on the path to success with a clear rubric.

Make it your own! Editable page is included.
