Description

This is a beginning of the year activity to creatively introduce students.

We start by exploring what a symbol is. Next, we go over the rubric and view some examples, rating them along the rubric. Students then choose 5 symbols (pictures, 3-D objects, or hand-drawn items) are used and attached to their hanger.

After forming the hanging display, in class each student writes what each symbol represents and why that symbol is important to the individual. You can choose to scaffold the writing however much is needed. I have attached a skeleton using sentence frames and some transition words, as well as an open outline.

The presentation portion is the last piece to this activity. After each student presents, we give "glow and grow" feedback and then students will also get feedback from me on their rubric.
