Description

Be Like a Tree 101 is an interactive series of seven short videos with original songs describing different aspects of trees: trees in history, the many blessings we get from trees, dangers of wildfires, love of trees, the secret lives of trees, roots in the underground, and the many different types of trees. Each video is about 2 minutes long and the whole series takes about 15 minutes. This would make the video ideal for a presentation to school children (grades 1-8) or environmental gatherings for children. Each of the seven videos end with questions designed to inspire appreciation and awareness of trees.

The series begins with the invitation for listeners to “be Like a tree”, i.e. to be supportive and observant of other people, but non-judgmental. This open-minded attitude can lead to the feeling of being “free”.

The instrumentation is simple cello and voice and basic percussion. The songs are short with repetitive choruses. Along with the audio/visual portion of the project, there is a lesson plan with the words and teaching ideas that go with each song. The audio/visual can be paused after each section, while listeners are given questions which encourage them add their own ideas and feelings.

Ultimately, this project hopes to increase the listeners’ awareness and respect for trees.  I hope my life long love and respect for trees will shine through my songs and inspire others to become “dendrophiles”.

Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals (including humans) and the places they live. Examples of relationships could include that deer eat buds and leaves, therefore, they usually live in forested areas; and, grasses need sunlight so they often grow in meadows. Plants, animals, and their surroundings make up a system.
