Back to school bundle - ESL adult conversation and business English lessons

‘Back to school is a collection of lessons that were designed as “ice breaker” lessons. Most of these are two-hour adult conversation lessons that can be given consecutively or as two separate one-hour lessons. these lessons were designed as ESL adult conversation lessons, but have been successfully used as high-school - psychology, character education, critical thinking, and life skill classes.

The beginning of the year is a hectic time; students are still getting to know one another, the style and rhythm of learning are yet to be determined, and you also have to factor in administrative and technical glitches. Every teacher I know has “special” lessons plans for these periods. These lessons need to be fun, (cross-culturally) interesting, and personally or emotionally engaging.

In this bundle, I have grouped together a few of my favorite lessons which I have been using as ‘back to school lessons’ for many years.

The purpose of these lessons is to:

· Bring new students together as a group

· Help new students join in an existing group

· Help students get acquainted with you and your style of teaching

· Start a new year with a bonding experience

· Set an example for what will be expected from them (conversation-wise) for the upcoming year.

They do this by:

· Introducing a universal concept that works with multi-cultural classes.

· Building on data from scientific research which gives a good solid base for intelligent conversation.

· Using an emotionally/personally charged topic to create an intimate conversation atmosphere, in which people open up and get to know each other by sharing their personal experiences.

I’m painfully aware of what seems to be a very poor judgment of career choice on my part, and to be honest, a large part of this choice was to stick it to Mrs. Jacobson that said that there’s no place for the likes of me with my “pretend excuses” for misspelling every third word, in any self-respecting educational institution (so you see how I naturally, had to become a teacher.)

For more than 25 years I’ve been teaching ESL adult classes and cross-culture business classes, and much like other challenged individuals who go through life with one hand tied behind their backs, I try to make up for what I lack in the spelling department with hours of research, high-quality graphics, humor, passion and love for what I do.

The fact that I can actually do this job is first and foremost a testimony to the open-mindedness (or desperation brought on by the long economic recession) of the schools that hired me over the years despite my very evident drawback, to the parents that tolerated grammar mishaps and most of all to my beautiful students who have learned to “always double-check their teacher” and have come up with the sweetest, most heart-warming and diplomatic ways of pointing out my spelling errors (putting to great use their newly-acquired conditional capacity: “I’m not sure, but, I think I might have spotted…”)

Over the years, I've personally contributed to the economic success of countless computer ‘correcting program’ available on the market (you're welcome Grammarly) and on top of that, my lessons are proofread by a few dedicated, wonderful, kind (and slightly horrified) TPT teachers, BUT there are always some errors that slip by us (mostly because I keep messing with the lessons after they've been proofread).
