Description
As you head back to school, try this morning work with a twist! Do you have a chatty class this year? Maybe they’re trying to tell you something! If your students come in the door talking, and can’t seem to settle down, why not channel that energy in a positive direction?
Morning Chat Prompts can do just that for you! The plan is simple: Ask kids to choose a chat group for the week or month. (You might just make it make it random or even just set up the groups yourself.) Post a prompt (Whiteboard or Chalkboard style - you choose!) as students are arriving for the day. Instead of heading to their seats and chatting their way aimlessly through morning work time, give them something to talk about!
These September prompts will help your students get to know each other a little better from the inside out as they begin to form a learning community with you. No writing! Just a friendly discussion about what the prompt means to each of them. Each group should have one member designated to report out to the class the main points of their discussion when you have morning meeting, class meeting, or just for a few minutes before your first class.
These prompts can be posted on your smart board or set up on individual computers or tablets for each group. The prompts are brief and very open-ended just to give students a way to begin the conversation.
When your students have a chance to chat it up first thing, they should be able to focus on learning for the rest of the day!
If you enjoy using these prompts, please be sure to follow Rainbow City Learning so you will
know when each new month is posted!
