Description

Teaching Writing With Mentor Texts includes children's books I have used successfully in a variety of grade levels to teach writing. Includes a summary of the book, a link for a reading of the book, and suggestions of what writing lessons will work with the books.

I taught K-8 pullout Gifted and Talented classes using these books. I also used them to teach high school students. The quality of writing produced varied widely depending on the grade level. The first graders had fun with first person narratives about fireflies while the high school students might be writing a story about a camping trip which included fireflies.

Some of the books are new and some of the books are what I consider "timeless".

This is a PDF or docx presentation intended for professional development with teachers or student teachers. I am a member of the National Writing Project and have participated in many programs involving mentor texts. I did not include Google Slides or PowerPoint presentations but if you would like those formats, please contact me in the questions section below. I could create them. Since it is Professional Development and not a classroom presentation I thought PDF and Docx would be what people would want to use with their staff or department.

I hope you will find something you can use with your students in the suggestions.
