Description

❤️ "This is one of the best resources I have purchased from this site. It was so easy for my students to have a purpose in their writing. It tied in nicely to our Story Element unit. After my students created their stories, we invited our administrators in for a "story time."

❤️ "This Resource is so much fun! I picked this resource because I really liked the creativity of the characters and their problem/plot. I feel like a lot of thought went into the types of characters, settings, and problems to help get some really fun, creative stories. The artwork that was used is so great! It doesn’t look too childish, so it can be used with my older students as well as my younger students. It’s really helps kids feel more comfortable creating stories as the prompts are funny and take some of the “pressure” off for having to come up with them all on their own. It can also be a great collaborative group activity. Thank you so much!"

❤️ "My students always struggle with writing. They lack ideas and need a lot of scaffolding. Having this colourful, creative and practical resource allows me to engage my students and inject fun in the teaching of writing. I am so glad I found such a wonderful ready-made resource. Awesome. Thank you."

❤️ "This product is awesome!! I am an ESL teacher, and a lot of my students get discouraged while writing because of the difficulty due to the level of their language proficiency. I used these a couple of times already this week with my students (newcomers included, but I modified their writing for them) and they loved it! They enjoyed that they just got to have fun and be creative with their writing! Thank you!"

❤️ "I will keep these prompts for the entirety of my teaching career - my children love using them and it really extends their thinking when it comes to story planning and writing. They get such a laugh out of using the different characters shown, most of which they wouldn't think of themselves. Highly recommend. "

❤️ "I can't wait to use these in my Morning Meetings and for extra writing practice! I know my class is going to create some outrageous stories too! Thank you- this is exactly what I was looking for!"

How I Use These Decks of Cards

SUGGESTIONS FOR USING THESE CARDS

ORAL STORYTELLING: This is a fun way to stimulate thinking and to model the narrative writing process using these cards.

Keep the cards separate: CHARACTERS, SETTINGS, PROBLEMS. Use the cards in a deck or place them in a bag. Model taking notes on a board or writing using a document projector.

The first time you use these cards, you might discuss and develop a story as a class to share how you would list ideas before writing. Then try another set of cards and have students work in partners or small groups to develop a story. Then have them share their stories in class.

STEPS FOR STORYTELLING

  • Have a student pull a CHARACTER CARD and display it using a document projector. Ask students to describe the character’s physical appearance. Then brainstorm possible emotions and personality traits the character might have.
  • Have another student pull a SETTING CARD and display it using a document projector. Encourage students to visualize the environment and describe the location. Ask how the character might react in the location.
  • Have another student pull a PROBLEM CARD and display it using a document projector. Discuss challenges or conflicts the character might encounter in the story and how the character might solve the problem.
  • Add one or more additional characters and discuss how this might change the plot and development of the story.

STEPS FOR NARRATIVE WRITING

  • BULLETIN BOARD: Display ten or more CHARACTER cards, SETTING cards, AND PROBLEM cards on a bulletin board. Allow students to view the cards, list descriptions and ideas, and then write!
  • CENTERS: Place cards in separate containers and allow students to make choices. Use the included writing sheet or for students to list ideas or have them prewrite ideas in their writing journals.
  • QUICK WRITE: Have a student pull one or more CHARACTER cards, a SETTING card, and a PROBLEM card. Project the cards. Give students an allowed amount of time to plan and then write a story. Make it fun with no other requirements. Students may share with the class or in partners if there is time. (Concentric circles strategy works well for sharing.)
