This art lesson is a perfect metal tooling or repousse lesson to introduce your middle and high school students to relief sculptures. In this relief sculpture art lesson, students will create a relief sculpture following metal tooling and repousse techniques. Students will be able to recall information about Aztec Art, specifically the Sun Stone of Mexico. Lastly, student will be able to create a radial artwork that resembles a sun using mixed media (paint, markers, color pencils or mixed).
They include standards (Use accurate vocabulary to analyze the structural elements of art and organizational principles of design to understand meaning and explain connections with other contexts.), objectives, vocabulary (relief sculpture, repousse & radial balance), materials needed, art critique of the Sun Stone, information about the Aztecs , step-by-step directions, student examples, and a YouTube art tutorial.
