Description

Attribute blocks are a wonderful way to use concrete models to understand abstract ideas! Attribute blocks help students to develop a strong conceptual understanding of similarities and differences, geometric shapes, and patterns.

The enrichment activities in this download are a FUN, meaningful way to take attribute blocks to the next level! These higher order thinking activities will help your students develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, logical reasoning, and confidence.

The 23 printable activities are sequenced according to difficulty. Detailed "Teacher Tools" are included to provide specific ways to prepare your students and scaffold their thinking for each higher order task. The “Teacher Tools” include suggestions for differentiation as well as tiered activities to meet the readiness levels of all students. Printable blocks are included for those who do not have, or would like to use them in addition to, the physical blocks.

The activities included can be used in centers and stations, small groups, and whole group. They are also excellent for learning contracts, anchor activities, cooperative learning, and tiered assignments.

Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
