Description
This product is a PowerPoint that covers the basics of the structure of an atom. It covers atoms as the building blocks of matter, protons, neutrons, electrons and their location within the atom, a brief explanation of electric charges, and the charges of the subatomic particles, and finally the concept of how the numbers of subatomic particles makes an atom unique from any other type of atom. 9 slides. Should only take about 30-40 minutes. Aimed at grades 6-8, but could easily be adapted for others. Has a matching fill-in the blank sheet for student notes included in the compressed .zip file.

In my opinion, this product could be used to support the teaching of Next Generation Science Standard MS-PS1-1** when used in conjunction with other materials. To be clear - this is not a comprehensive guide to the standard but I believe it could be used to start students on the path to mastering it. The standard states:
"Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures. "
