This lab is a FUN combination of both science and math providing students with a cooperative group lab opportunity. Students will set up their atmospheric cross section graph by labeling their x and y axes as instructed or simply use the graph template provided.

Students then plot temperature versus altitude and make the correlation between temperature behaviors and trends with how the Earth's atmospheric layers are differentiated. Students also graph air pressure and will note the different trends in reference to increasing altitude when compared to air temperature.

When graphing is complete, students use this graphed data to separate our atmosphere into layers.

Students add the finishing touches by coloring the cross section, making a key, and pasting the appropriate objects into their respective atmospheric layer.

In a variety of pedagogical strategies conclusion questions are provided at the end.

This has been used in special education, college prep, and advanced classes within general science and earth and space science from grade levels 5 - 9.

A great addition to your meteorology teaching library.

Applicable to many state science assessments and benchmarks.

Has been applied to state mandated North Carolina end of year tests for science in grades 5 and 8.

Even used by teachers in New York State as a preparation for the Earth Science Grade 9 Regents Exam.
